Longtime partner and recent enemy Samsung is still handling production duties for Apple’s A7 chip set to go into the iPhone 5S this fall, but Apple has found itself increasingly eager to get out from any reliance on Samsung or any arrangement which places revenue in Samsung’s pocket, as relations between the two tech giants continue to deteriorate and the two dissolve into what could charitably be described as frenemies. Apple has already shifted iPhone 6 screen production to Sharp but has been reluctant to pull the plug on the final remaining Samsung component in the iPhone.
